What is an Upside Down Cake ?

The pineapple upside down cake was popularised in the USA by a company called Dole. In 1920 the company organised a pineapple recipe competition and received over 2500 recipes of an upside down pineapple cake. The company went ahead and advertised it, hence making it famous.
Upside down cakes are generally cakes in which the pan is layered with a fresh topping in the beginning, and then cake batter is poured over and baked. Once baked the cake is inverted out of the pan and the bottom layer of toppings becomes upright, hence the name, upside down cake.
